Manage stress during a divorce with these 5 tips

A divorce is stressful at the best of times. You're ending a relationship that you may have thought would be forever, and at the same time, you're dealing with financial and legal stressors.

It can be hard to overcome the stress of a divorce, which is why it's a smart choice to look into ways to make your divorce easier. Here are some tips to help you.

1. Get your attorney on board immediately

When you're faced with a divorce, the first thing to do is to contact your attorney. Letting your attorney know what's happening is a great first step to relieving some of the stress of your divorce and reducing your anxiety. Your attorney will talk to you about your concerns and help you figure out what you can do to make the divorce move more smoothly.

2. Take time for yourself

Another good tip is to take time for yourself when you're not focused on the divorce. This could be time on the weekends when you go out and see friends or it could be a few evenings a week where you don't do anything to do with the divorce.

3. Get your finances in order

If your spouse approaches you and asks for a divorce, one of the first things to do is to get your finances in order. You might take a withdrawal from your bank account or make sure you have your paychecks rerouted to a new bank account, for example, so that you always have access to your funds.

4. Shut down social media

Another tip is to shut down your social media account, so that your estranged spouse doesn't have access. This can help you avoid trouble if they're searching your accounts or using them to harass you.

5. Be thorough in finding your assets

Finally, make sure you write down all of the assets you have and collect any documents for financial investments, bank accounts or others. Doing this makes it easier to compare notes with your spouse and to negotiate to separate your assets, since you'll be able to identify all you have, seek an assessment for the values of those assets and then suggest which assets you'd like to keep or give to your spouse.

Your attorney will talk to you more about steps you can take to make a divorce easier. With good planning, you'll be able to move through your divorce easily.
