Watch out for these 4 divorce mistakes

On Behalf of | Nov 27, 2018 | Firm News |

When you’re going through a divorce, there is a potential for making serious mistakes that could impact you for some time to come. For example, did you know that the time of year you file for divorce could impact you? Yes, if your spouse gets bonuses each quarter or earns more during a certain time of year, you might want to wait to file.

There are many mistakes people make during divorce, but these four are some of the most common. Here’s what you should avoid doing.

1. Don’t hide your assets

To start with, don’t play games during divorce. You need to be honest and straightforward, so you know what your assets are and what your spouse has as well. If you hide assets, you could end up getting into deep trouble with the court. It will not give you a good reputation and could threaten your chances at getting the property you want in divorce.

2. Don’t start out on the attack

The mistake some people make is starting a divorce as if it’s an attack. You want to be able to work with the other party and negotiate. If you are offensive or threatening, they’re less likely to want to negotiate, and that will drag out the divorce.

3. Don’t use social media to air your concerns

Another thing to avoid is using social media to bash the other party or to say too much. You should also make sure not to post about your current life, any new romantic partners or other factors that could affect your divorce. In most cases, it’s better to avoid social media, so you don’t say or do something that you regret.

4. Don’t sign documents without reading them

It is simply irresponsible to sign any kind of legal document without reading it. You need to know what the document says and understand what it means for you now and in the future.

Your attorney can review the documents you receive, so they can help you understand them before you sign. Take time to review every document and avoid rushing to sign to get them out of the way.

These are just four of the many mistakes people tend to make. It’s a good idea to speak with your attorney about other things you should avoid doing while you’re going through the divorce process with your spouse.
