Lakewood Child Support Attorney

Seeing That Your Child Gets The Right Amount Of Support

When a divorce involves children, the issue of child support is always an important consideration. Raising a child costs money, and it is important for both parents to contribute. That contribution must be fair. At Pearson & Paris, P.C., our lawyers have more than 50 years of combined legal experience. We are committed to using that experience to see that child support payments are sufficient to meet the child's needs, yet fair for the parent making the payments.

Following The Formula

In the vast majority of divorce cases, the issue of support is not particularly complex, thanks to the existence of clear child support guidelines. These guidelines look at two broad factors: the income of both parents and the amount of time each parent spends with the child. In most cases, the role of our attorneys is simply to see that the information used in the calculation is accurate so that the outcome will be fair.

Deviating From The Formula

While the child support guidelines make sense most of the time, they do not make sense all of the time. Our lawyers have the experience to quickly spot cases that require deviation from the guidelines. For example, if one parent is self-employed and income hasn't been reported properly, simply using that inaccurate income wouldn't make sense. Also, if one parent has the potential to make a substantial income, but has chosen not to, we will strive to see that child support payments reflect the parents' earning potential.

Post-Divorce Child Support Matters

Modifications of existing child support arrangements may be necessary due to job loss or other financial issues. Enforcement of these arrangements may be necessary if payments are not being made. Nonpayment can cause serious problems, including loss of professional licenses. We know how to straighten out these disputes with minimal impact.
